Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) wished Victory Day with a sweet gift to the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Hili border in Dinajpur.
On the other hand, a Bangladeshi youth named Zahidul Islam (20) was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at Srirampur border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on the same day. Later, the BSF dragged his body away.
According to the BGB, a group of 7/8 Bangladeshi cattle traders with the help of Indian cattle traders went near Main Pillar No. 652 and Sub-Pillar No. 5 of the Serampore Union border at around 5 am on Wednesday to fetch cows from India. When the members of the crossing team reached the border in the middle of the Ratanpur BSF camp, the members of the patrol team of the Ratanpur camp of the 140 Raninagar BSF battalion of India fired at them.
Jahidul Islam of Madhya Islampur village in Srirampur Union was shot dead on the spot. Jahidul is the son of Dulal Hossain of Islampur village.
One Indian and one Bangladeshi cattle crosser were injured in the BSF firing, border sources said.
However, the names and addresses of the injured were not known. The body of the slain Bangladeshi was lying on the Indian side of the border till noon. Mekhliganj police came to India at 1 pm and took the body for autopsy.
Subedar Azharul, company commander of Shamsher Nagar Border Guard Battalion (BGB) in Patgram, confirmed the death of a Bangladeshi cattle crosser at the border to the media. He said the BGB 71 Battalion had sent a proposal for a flag meeting at the battalion level with a strong protest letter. He also said that the body would be returned after the flag meeting.
